VHF RADIO CHECKLISTS & TEMPLATES FOR SAILORS

Hi, I'm Simon from Sailing Britican.

Hey - if you had to perform a MAYDAY call this very moment would you know the exact procedure and words to use when making the announcement?

What if that broadcast was needed to help someone you love?

We take it for it for granted that on land we can call 911 and get an emergency responder onsite within minutes.

On a boat, help might come, at best, in hours and at worst in days. The last thing a new boater wants to think about is worst-case scenarios but failing to understand how to use the VHF Radio correctly could mean life or death.

By knowing how to use the VHF emergency response system in addition to the exact wording necessary to communicate with the Coast Guard you'll be prepared to handle any emergency.

How to make a vhf radio call web

Let me share three things about how you can prepare yourself.

I know you probably want to think that nothing bad will ever happen when you're on watch, but accidents happen all the time. And what if something happens to you?

People fall overboard or bang their heads. The largest mishap on a sailboat is someone falling down the companionway stairs!

Let me show you a great way that you can learn everything you need to know to make emergency and non-emergency VHF Radio broadcasts within minutes.

THREE THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT VHF BROADCASTS

The first thing to know is that there is a set procedure for using the VHF.

Often the Captain of the boat knows what to do but others on the boat have no idea. It's imperative that everyone aboard the boat can easily access a step-by-step procedure on how to activate the VHF emergency system.

It's as simple as pushing a button and following a few prompts. By activating the system an alarm will be sent out to all ships in the vicinity announcing your need for assistance.

VHF RADIO

This is important because you need to quickly announce to all the boats in your area what your issue is. For example, if you've had someone go overboard you'll want every boat possible to be on the look-out. Or, if your engine has cut out and you're getting close to shallows, you'll want the boat nearest you to come and tow you away.

The second thing to know about making VHF Radio calls is that activating the emergency system is only part of the procedure.

Once the alarm goes out to all the ships nearby it's imperative to follow up with a very specific verbal broadcast that announces where you are, what the issue is, how many people are on board and any other pertinent information.

It's important to know the script because when talking to the Coast Guard they won't have to ask you delaying questions - you'll already know what to tell them. By quickly communicating the information they need you'll be saving valuable time.

The third point I want to make about the importance of knowing how to make emergency VHF Radio calls is that there are a variety of call categories.

It's important to use the MAYDAY only when it truly us an urgent and imminent threat to someone's life. There are other calls and verbal scripts for Pan-Pan's and Securites.

The main thing to understand here is that you need to know what script to use for different circumstances. If you use the wrong script you could endanger the lives of loved ones or simply look like a rookie sailor. You don't want all the boaties talking about you over sundowners, now do you?

Now, I know what you're thinking.

You know what to say. You know how to use the VHF. Or perhaps you know it's important and you're going to make sure you know how to handle emergencies. But what about everyone else on your boat? And what if you're the casualty?

Before we left land and headed out to sea my wife, Kim, created a series of checklists on how to use the VHF depending on what type of broadcast was required. She also created fill-in-the-blank templates so that we could easily write in the pertinent information and have all the standard things like our MMSI and Call Sign already to hand. Furthermore, Kim made reference tables for the phonetic alphabet and numbers (needed when relaying important information).

What this means is that anyone with Kim's checklists and templates would easily be able to grab the one they need, fill in a few details and then follow the instructions on how to activate the emergency system and the exact words they needed to say.

Essentially, Kim created a step-by-step easy to use manual on how to make emergency and non-emergency VHF Radio calls for those that don't use the VHF often (or ever).

THESE CHECKLISTS HELP TO SAVE THESE TWO MEN

After seven years of having our checklists and templates in our drawer we finally had to use them. While sailing off the coast of Grenada we almost ran over these two men (pictured) in the open sea.

Their boat had capsized and had we not almost run them over we would have never seen them.

A few seconds after it dawned on us that the two men were in grave danger, we signaled to them that we were turning around to get them. I took charge of the boat and Kim went downstairs to the VHF.

How to make a VHF Radio Call

Kim pulled out our template, took a deep breath, and read out the MAYDAY script. To our relief four boats in the area responded and immediately headed towards us - one having a nurse on board.

It gives me chills thinking about it. We recovered the two men. They would have lasted another 10 minutes maximum. One couldn't swim and was holding onto a cooler and the other was struggling to keep his head above water.

Even though we use the VHF all the time we rarely make emergency broadcasts. By having the procedure and script in place it was easy for Kim to know what to do and when.

So...if you'd like to have a copy of VHF Radio Checklists & Templates to have handy in your Navigation Station drawer, you can purchase it here.

For a limited time only we're offering to customize the checklists and templates to have your boat name, MMSI number and call sign so all you have to do is fill out the pertinent information and read the script.

Like I said - this guide might not be for you, but it will certainly help anyone else on your boat that might need to save you! Get this guide today. You won't be disappointed.

Confident Sailing Cruiser Collection
  • Effectively get your partner (family too) to wholeheartedly join you in your pursuit so that it’s a team effort and not one person dragging the other person along.
  • Build up your confidence in performing the standard tasks (using step-by-step checklists and templates) that almost all new sailors get drastically wrong so that you avoid massive failure at the start.
  • Successfully perform the mission-critical joint tasks you and your partner will need to know so you look like know what you’re doing from the start.
  • Communicate with your partner effectively so that joint tasks like anchoring, mooring balls, maneuvering in tight places, and passage planning don’t end in arguments.
  • Set up all the necessary routines, procedures, and calendars for cleaning, preventative maintenance, and safety/medical equipment so you know what you need to do and when you need to do it from day one!
  • Determine and allocate all the roles and responsibilities necessary to get the boat ship shape so you and your partner/family know who’s responsible for each task necessary to ensure a well-maintained and safe boat.
  • Avoid being suckered into all the things you can spend your money on! Spend it wisely on the kit that you really need so your cruising budget lasts longer.
  • Figure out what systems you can work on yourself and what’s best to outsource so you can save time and money.
  • Know the systems that break down at sea so you can fix them without having to call for help (especially a good thing when there is no help around!).
  • Effectively deal with the four big sickness worries that cruisers face, seasickness being a big one, so you don’t have to be confined to bed, or hospital, unnecessarily.
  • Fit in as a sailing cruiser from day one so that you can avoid embarrassing situations. Yes – sailing cruisers, like any community, have certain do’s and don’ts.
  • Properly use the VHF radio to call marina’s, other boats and do the standard safety messages so you don’t look like a novice. Note: Never say ‘Over and out!’ If you do, you have to buy a round of beers for everyone at the bar.
  • Make passage plans using modern technology so you don’t have to rely on the antiquated paper charts and sailing school methods that are obsolete and dated.
  • Set your expectations realistically so you, or your partner, are not disappointed.
  • Have at hand the step-by-step list on how to prepare your boat for a storm in a marina or at an anchorage so you decrease your chances of damage or loss.

Coaching Call

Robert Bernie – September 2020

Simon and I had a fantastic converstation. He got me to offer $5,000 below what I was going to offer. I went back and forth with owner and in the end I paid $4,000 less than what I originally intended. Simon saved me $4,000 due to one phone call!

Sailboat Buying Guide - 5 Star Review

Roland R. - October 22, 2019

I am interested in sailing but not ready to take the plunge yet. The book gives great information. I still need to brush up on the sailing terms and probably reread the book. Overall I think it is a great book for buying a sailboat.

Coaching Call

Diana McDade - 2019

Simon and Kim on Britican were such a big help to me when I was preparing for our crossing from San Diego to Honolulu. My coaching calls were such a reassurance to me, and I incorporated all of the advice that was given as far as provisioning and tips for handling trash, spare parts, and just having someone to bounce thoughts off of...

Sailboat Buying Guide & Coaching Call - 5 Star Review

The Smith Family  – January 2020

We started off buying Kim's Sailboat Buying Guide which got us off to a great start. After narrowing down a few boats we asked Simon to look through the specifications and then we had a chat about the pros and cons of each boat. The call was one of the largest learning curves we went through - we had so many ah-ha moments and really started to learn how to look at the experience in a different way. My wife and I can't say enough. The guide and the call not only saved us money but it saved us so much time going in the wrong direction. Before you buy a boat, talk to Simon and Kim.

All Guides, Coaching Calls & Britican Experience

J. Paquet - 2019 to 2020

My wife and I purchased all of Kim's guides, we did the coaching calls, went on the Britican Experience (a week with Simon and Kim in the Caribbean) and we worked with Simon and Kim's recommended broker. We now have our boat! Soon we'll be heading out to live the life.

Coaching Call

L. Lee – September 2020

Simon saved me tens of thousands of dollars. He also prevented me from buying the wrong boat for what I wanted to do. It should be law that everyone has a chat with him before buying a boat.
