Exploring Crete Greece

Crete Greece is an amazing island. I can’t say that it’s amazing for sailors but as long as your expectations are accurate you’ll find this island to be full of goodies.

Agios Nikolaos, Gournia, Mochlos and Vai Beach

The island is spectacularly beautiful, but it’s worth knowing that most of the marinas are not that great. Also, anchoring can be difficult. This is definitely an area where you’ll want to research before heading there.

After arriving in Agios Nicolaos Marina we decided to tour the area by car first and then sail the boat west discovering everything we could about Crete. Don’t book days or weeks for Crete – you need at least a good month to see the island. Better yet, consider Crete a good place to winter yourself and the boat.

Knossos, Aqua Park and Elounda

One of my best days ever – we saw the most amazing ancient site, Knossos followed by shear fun at a waterpark and ended up eating snails for dinner. When you’re traveling around Crete, consider this wonderful combination of experiences all in one day!

Anchored off of Spinalonga Island Crete

Our plan was to leave Agios Nikolaos and head to Rethymno avoiding Heraklion as someone told us the marina wasn’t very nice. Instead, we made it to Spinalonga Island Crete – an ex-Leper colony!

Anchoring off the town of Bali

Sailing to Bali Crete was well worth the trip. The anchorage has beautiful views from every angle, there’s loads of watersports and some great eateries.

The Venetian City of Chania Crete

Chania Crete – A Venetian harbor filled with uniquely decorated tavernas, bars, and shops greets you upon arrival. And traces of history can be seen from every angle – an old Turkish Mosque, a Jewish Synagogue, an Orthodox Cathedral, and the Venetian wall to name some.

Agios Nikolaos Marina – Crete: A review

Agios Nikolaos Marina is the most popular marina for sailing cruisers in Crete. Many cruisers choose to spend winters aboard the boat in this location. We didn’t stay for long, but here are our thoughts of the marina.
