The Leap of Faith: Finding Adventure at Sea

Sometimes, the best adventures start with uncertainty and courage, especially when finding adventure at sea. My husband, Simon, and I discovered that ten years ago. With a three-and-a-half-year-old daughter in tow, we sold everything, bought a sailboat, and explored the world. We have zero regrets. The sailing cruiser lifestyle benefits are exponential.

It was a leap of faith, for sure. We had limited sailing experience and were tackling a massive learning curve. The open ocean is a humbling teacher, but the rewards—oh, the rewards—made every challenge worthwhile. Living on a sailboat full-time is a dream life! From the shimmering blue waters of the Mediterranean to the vibrant sunsets of the Caribbean, new and old friends in every anchorage, we made memories that will last a lifetime.

The Adventure Doesn’t End

While I eventually moved ashore for our daughter’s schooling, Simon has continued to live the dream. Actually, he is living and teaching it! Simon teaches families and couples the ropes of cruising life on a spacious 50-foot catamaran. Last week, a new adventurer joined him on his latest Sailing Lifestyle Experience charter—Lauren, a 20-year-old deckhand and videographer ready to take her leap of faith.

Lauren is documenting her finding adventure at sea leap-of-faith journey. Like us, she’s facing the unknown, pushing her boundaries, and embracing the challenge. Lauren heard about crewing jobs, became qualified, and started her search for a job in St Martin. As fate would have it, Lauren bumped into Simon, and the rest is history. The sailing life isn’t just for families with years of experience—it’s for anyone with a bit of daring in their soul.

Is Finding Adventure at Sea in Your Future?

Are you feeling a little restless? Are you craving a change, a challenge, or a touch of salty freedom? Do you want to discover the secret benefits of becoming a liveaboard sailing cruiser? We often think that when we’re young, we have to hunker down, get a degree, find a partner, have kids, and perhaps later, we can find adventure. Then, with age comes too much responsibility and settling into routines. There are always excuses! But what if real fulfillment comes from ignoring what most of society is doing and finding your free spirit? That’s where the sailing lifestyle comes in.

Imagine the taste of wind and sea spray on your face. Picture exploring hidden coves, swimming in crystal-clear waters, and sharing sundowners with new friends under a sky with stars. This isn’t fantasy – it is possible finding adventure at sea.

Finding Adventure At Sea – Guest Feedback

Here’s what Brian, featured in the video, wrote about his Sailing Lifestyle Experience:

“Come to Simon with questions and you’ll get answers, but the conclusions will be your own. Come if you want to learn the realities of cruising (not You Tube sailing fantasies), both the good and the difficult from someone who has lived it —mind you, not on his own, but with a wife and young child.

Expect an honest assessment of what this lifestyle actually costs, both physically and economically and your ability to achieve it. This isn’t a sit-back-and-be-served by a crew luxury experience; it’s immersive.

It’s for people who want to preview what the lifestyle is all about including provisioning, planning routes and executing the sailing plan —safety and feasibility being in the forefront. Simon is a true professional, as well as an excellent host and all-around great guy. I wanted to ascertain if this made sense for me and my fellow Boomer partner. In the end, we learned that life aboard a catamaran in the Caribbean makes no sense for us. I arrived with a naive vision that I was still capable of what I could do 30 years ago; it was a rude awakening to find that basic tasks proved more challenging than anticipated. Simon provided honest and valuable feedback, which we appreciated, and now we know what will work for us will be a different sailing experience, one closer to home aboard a manageable monohull, which has greater appeal.

If you and your partner have any questions, as you should prior to purchasing your dream boat, Simon should be your first stop. Our week with him was the best ROI I ever got and when I buy the boat of my new, more realistic dreams, it will be because of what I learned from this trip.

We also had a great time! Thanks Simon”
