Florida – Ideas On Where To Sail Along The East Coast

Here you will find videos and articles of our Florida sailing experiences. Each article/video offers information on passage planning, what the journey was like, entrances to anchorages and marinas, and things to do at each location. We also include a bit of lifestyle stuff too so you get the full picture of what it’s like to be a sailing cruiser in and around Florida.

If you’re planning a trip down the east coast of America and want to stop in Florida before heading to the Bahamas you might just want to stop in the same places we did.

Amelia Island

Sail with us from Charleston, SC to Amelia Island in Florida. Discover what the lead-up to leaving, the passage, and our arrival was like.

St Augustine, Florida

The trip from Amelia Island to St Augustine took 12 hours. We left our mooring in the darkness at 6 am and arrived in St Augustine Municipal Marina mooring field around 2 pm. Our aim was to leave early so to ensure a daylight arrival at our destination. Join us for the passage, see what it looks like to enter St Augustine, and find out why we thought it was one of our most favorite stops in Florida.

Cape Canaveral

After spending two enjoyable days and nights in St Augustine, we slipped our mooring ball lines. It was a crisp cool morning and there was a very slight breeze. The sun was shining and we were eager to head down to Cape Canaveral, a 20-hour sail. While there we went to the Kennedy Space Center – what a treat! If you’ve never stopped there before it’s well worth doing so when you sail along Florida.

West Palm Beach

What’s it like to sail into West Palm Beach? Find out here by joining us on the journey. From Cape Canaveral out into the Atlantic Ocean and then into the Intracoastal Waterway, we made our way to Palm Beach Harbor Marina. Watch what we did to determine if you might want to do the same.

West Palm Beach To Fort Lauderdale Down the Intracostal Waterway

The Intracoastal Waterway, or ICW, is a 3,000-mile (4,800 km) inland waterway along the Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico coasts of the United States. It runs from Boston, Massachusetts, south along the Atlantic coast and around the southern tip of Florida, then following the Gulf Coast to Brownsville, Texas. We ran aground four times…but it was a great trip. Read this article and watch our video.

Fort Lauderdale

This post offers a sailing trip on the ICW and up the New River. In the video, Simon shows our navigation plan from West Palm Beach to Lettuce Lake via the ICW. I point out president Trump’s house. We go through loads of bridges and our volunteer crew member, Andrew, does some bird watching. Sienna does here homeschooling. And Simon runs us aground four times.

Fort Lauderdale, Florida To The Bahamas

We sailed for two nights from Florida to arrive at our destination. It was an interesting trip across the gulf stream and entering our location in the Bahamas was slightly scary due to depths. Check out our passage and determine if you’d like to make the same trip.

THE BRITICAN EXPERIENCE - A WEEK-LONG BLUEWATER CRUISING EXPERIENCE

"Sailing Britican was more than a vacation on the beach. For a week we tasted a new way of life we didn’t know possible. We couldn’t say it better than Margaret, our four-year-old “being on a boat is the life for me! Wind in my hair, not a care!”

With the constant sound of crashing waves, a rocking boat, the sunsets, and translucent waters glistening it’s a challenge to pinpoint our favorite moments.

Every moment of every day seemed to gel together helping us to forget our worries on land. Thank you to Kim and Simon for sharing their sailing expertise, introduced us to other sailing families, and a pace of life full of fresh and salty air! Their home is truly a dream, their sailing stories an unforgettable experience!

They are generous people who want to share this life with all who dare to seek it. What a phenomenal experience for our family of five. Even our littlest member turned one on Britican, a memory we will cherish forever." Dorothy, Roger, Isla, Margaret & Patrick
