SAILBOAT BUYING GUIDE

For Cruisers!

Hi – I’m Simon Brown and my family and I help people to find the right boat to head out and enjoy the sailboat cruising lifestyle.

For years we’ve been helping people to understand what the ‘right’ boat is. For you the right boat will be different than someone else’s right boat.

What I have on offer for you today is a guide, or a blueprint, on how to determine what right is for YOU, and your partner in your particular situation and then explain the full boat buying process (and how to avoid common pitfalls).

I know that your problem might be that it’s hard to determine where to start, what boats to consider, how much to spend and how to eventually narrow down what boats to look at. Heck, not only are there thousands of types of boats out there but so many of them are absolute lemons so at first the whole process might seem like a minefield.

Unfortunately there’s a growing trend of new cruisers that are spending tens of thousands of dollars (even hundreds of thousands of dollars) and they’re ending up with a boat that really isn’t right at all. The sad fact is, however, that they find this out too late!

They find out AFTER they’ve spent huge amounts of money.

That’s why my wife wrote our ‘Sailboat Buying Guide’ so that you have a step-by-step framework on where to start, how to proceed and what to do to ensure that you not only know what you want but you know how to get it.

I’m certain that this quick and easy-to-read guide will provide you with such a good foundation that you’ll be able to progress towards the purchase of your right boat in no time.

But let me first ask you some questions:

  • Do you want to change your lifestyle to one that is more expansive, freeing, and flowing?
  • Are you interested in seeing ever changing breathtaking views, tasting delicious foreign foods, and knowing that the wind will help you move to your next amazing destination?
  • Has the time come to say no more to the rat race and non-stop negative media circus and trade it in for quality adventure and conversations with new friends?
  • Perhaps you’ve been thinking about buying a boat and living the sailing lifestyle for a while now. Why haven’t you made it happen yet? When are you going to make it happen?

Well if you answered ‘yes’ to my questions and you know that NOW is the time to make things happen, by the time you make it to the bottom of this page, I’m hoping you’ll be inspired to buy our Sailboat Buying Guide.

Because we’ve been living the sailing lifestyle for seven years and those are just a small sample of what makes this life so amazing.

But before I go on about the guide, let me tell you an important story.

One of our dear friends worked all his life dreaming of one day getting a sailboat to sail around the world. Throughout his boyhood and adult life he messed around with motorboats but one day he promised himself that he’d get a proper boat to sail the big seas. His goal was to sail around the world traveling to all sorts of exotic destinations. He wanted to experience the tropics and also the colder climates.

Just after his early retirement he spent weeks determine the right boat for him. It had to be as big as possible so to ensure his wife had enough space to keep her things and feel comfortable. The boat also had to be steel so that if they hit and iceberg there would be no catastrophic damage. The master bedroom had to have a super king sized bed as this was going to be a home, not just a vessel. And the list went on.

The common mistake that our friend made was that he thought of the prospective boat as if it was a house.

He failed to consider whether him and his wife could handle a big boat. He also didn’t realized that bigger isn’t better in more ways that one. Furthermore, although his intention was to perhaps go into waters with ice in it, the reality of sailing the northern or southern waters wasn’t going to happen anytime soon.

So our friend boat a 65’ steel ketch for him and his wife. He then spent hundreds of thousands of dollars renovating the aft cabin to have the king sized bed. He also reinforced the steel plates on the front of the boat to ensure the boat would be unsinkable.

The couple sold their house, moved onto the boat to do the renovations and as time went by they slowly realized that they couldn’t even sail the boat. They needed a crew of at least a couple more people. Every project they started cost more than double what was budgeted.

Furthermore, they eventually came to the conclusion that they were too scared to take the boat out.

Had our friend purchased a smaller boat, perhaps used the money spent on renovations for a small apartment and just got out sailing they might have had a chance at living the sailing lifestyle. And had they realized they didn’t like sailing they could have at least had an apartment to live in!

I know – hindsight, yes, it is a wonderful thing. It can’t help our friends, but it can help you.

Instead of living the life our friends were forced to live on the boat in a marina for a year slowly reducing the price to almost nothing near what they paid. The retirement payout was depreciated and the couple weren’t far from marital separation. In the end the boat became a noose around their necks.

What went wrong?

The couple didn’t spend time understanding what they wanted to achieve (in all senses of the word), they failed to look at the common variables on a boat to determine what was right and what would be wrong for them, they didn’t calculate the costs – especially the hidden ones, and instead of going out sailing they made the boat the end-game rather than the lifestyle the end-game.

As my wife and I watched our lovely friends go through such a difficult process we felt helpless. The damage was already done. The best we could do was help them find a way out.

And then we saw that many of our coaching clients were repeating the same or similar mistakes (prior to getting in touch with us). None as drastic as our dear friend but not too far off!

If you haven’t bought or lived on many boats how would you know what criteria to use to determine the factors that make a boat right or wrong?

Too many people buy a boat without considering the key factors about the sailing lifestyle and whether or not the boat will deliver the lifestyle they want. Furthermore, too many new boaters try to get a boat that covers all situations in all parts of the world from the get-go.

I suppose it’s a case of – ‘look at that boat, that looks good’. Instead of, ‘what do we want, why do we want it, how do we want it to work, who is going to do what and can we do that, will the boat be good in the areas we want to go…’ and on and on.

And that’s when we decided we wanted to create a guide that took people through the process of not only buying a boat but thinking about what would make the right boat.

A guide that would help with the initial thought process to define the big picture. And to list the common variables that need to be considered. Furthermore, to outline what the costs are to buying, owning and sailing a boat so budgeting isn’t impossible.

We also wanted to relay to buyers that when buying a boat it is very much a system of ‘buyer beware’. Brokers are quite often very disingenuous people. You have to learn what you need to know to make good decisions.

Our guide helps to weed out the duds so you don’t waste time.

Furthermore, we created a list of what to look at when you visit a boat for your personal inspection. You’ll definitely need a professional surveyor to survey the boat but before doing that it’s imperative that you or someone you trust looks at the boat first.

Within our guide we offer a list of what to look at, why you need to look at it and what it will look like if it’s not good.

What you won’t find in the guide is too much information.

We don’t discuss all the options of each variable because the reader will get lost in the woods. You also won’t find anything telling you what to do. It’s a framework to work through rather than a place to get in-depth information. It can be read and analyzed over a couple days rather than spending weeks to get your head around.

We’ve watched too many would-be sailors loose too much money buying the wrong boat.

Don’t follow in their footsteps and go through the pain they have. Start off on the right foot.

When we started out we just wanted to talk to someone that has done it, been there, bought the t-shirt.

Someone that could look over whether we were choosing the right boat or what to make our first offer amount. We wanted to know how much below the value of the boat to start at.

We wondered if it was worth negociating the price down if we were surprized by survey results?

In some cases we had very simple yet specific questions that if answered would help reduce the stress and help us move forward with more confidence. In other cases, had we asked some key broad questions we could have save tens of thousands of dollars!

But how have we helped our viewers/readers? As one of our past guests explained:

Simon and I had a fantastic converstation. He got me to offer $5,000 below what I was going to offer. I went back and forth with owner and in the end I paid $4,000 less than what I originally intended. Simon saved me $4,000 due to one phone call!

Robert Bernie – Simon and I had a fantastic converstation. He got me to offer $5,000 below what I was going to offer. I went back and forth with owner and in the end I paid $4,000 less than what I originally intended. Simon saved me $4,000 due to one phone call!

Diana McDade – 2019Simon and Kim on Britican were such a big help to me when I was preparing for our crossing from San Diego to Honolulu. My coaching talks I subscribed for were such a reassurance to me, and I incorporated all of the advice that was given as far as provisioning and tips for handling trash, spare parts, and just having someone to bounce thoughts off of…

The Smith Family  – We started off buying Kim’s Sailboat Buying Guide which got us off to a great start. After narrowing down a few boats we asked Simon to look through the specifications and then we had a chat about the pros and cons of each boat. The call was one of the largest learning curves we went through – we had so many ah-ha moments and really started to learn how to look at the experience in a different way. My wife and I can’t say enough. The guide and the call not only saved us money but it saved us so much time going in the wrong direction. Before you buy a boat, talk to Simon and Kim.

J. Paquet – 2019 to 2020My wife and I purchased all of Kim’s guides, we did the coaching calls, went on the Britican Experience (a week with Simon and Kim in the Caribbean) and we worked with Simon and Kim’s recommended broker. We now have our boat! Soon we’ll be heading out to live the life.

L. Lee – September 2020Simon saved me tens of thousands of dollars. He also prevented me from buying the wrong boat for what I wanted to do. It should be law that everyone has a chat with him before buying a boat.
