But before I go on about the guide, let me tell you an important story.
One of our dear friends worked all his life dreaming of one day getting a sailboat to sail around the world. Throughout his boyhood and adult life he messed around with motorboats but one day he promised himself that he’d get a proper boat to sail the big seas. His goal was to sail around the world traveling to all sorts of exotic destinations. He wanted to experience the tropics and also the colder climates.
Just after his early retirement he spent weeks determine the right boat for him. It had to be as big as possible so to ensure his wife had enough space to keep her things and feel comfortable. The boat also had to be steel so that if they hit and iceberg there would be no catastrophic damage. The master bedroom had to have a super king sized bed as this was going to be a home, not just a vessel. And the list went on.
The common mistake that our friend made was that he thought of the prospective boat as if it was a house.
He failed to consider whether him and his wife could handle a big boat. He also didn’t realized that bigger isn’t better in more ways that one. Furthermore, although his intention was to perhaps go into waters with ice in it, the reality of sailing the northern or southern waters wasn’t going to happen anytime soon.
So our friend boat a 65’ steel ketch for him and his wife. He then spent hundreds of thousands of dollars renovating the aft cabin to have the king sized bed. He also reinforced the steel plates on the front of the boat to ensure the boat would be unsinkable.
The couple sold their house, moved onto the boat to do the renovations and as time went by they slowly realized that they couldn’t even sail the boat. They needed a crew of at least a couple more people. Every project they started cost more than double what was budgeted.
Furthermore, they eventually came to the conclusion that they were too scared to take the boat out.
Had our friend purchased a smaller boat, perhaps used the money spent on renovations for a small apartment and just got out sailing they might have had a chance at living the sailing lifestyle. And had they realized they didn’t like sailing they could have at least had an apartment to live in!
I know – hindsight, yes, it is a wonderful thing. It can’t help our friends, but it can help you.
Instead of living the life our friends were forced to live on the boat in a marina for a year slowly reducing the price to almost nothing near what they paid. The retirement payout was depreciated and the couple weren’t far from marital separation. In the end the boat became a noose around their necks.
What went wrong?
The couple didn’t spend time understanding what they wanted to achieve (in all senses of the word), they failed to look at the common variables on a boat to determine what was right and what would be wrong for them, they didn’t calculate the costs – especially the hidden ones, and instead of going out sailing they made the boat the end-game rather than the lifestyle the end-game.
As my wife and I watched our lovely friends go through such a difficult process we felt helpless. The damage was already done. The best we could do was help them find a way out.
And then we saw that many of our coaching clients were repeating the same or similar mistakes (prior to getting in touch with us). None as drastic as our dear friend but not too far off!
