Sailboat Hydraulic Systems – How Can Hydraulics Help You?

Sailboat hydraulic systems are an essential component in modern boats. They allow sailors to control various sail and rigging systems with ease. Let’s explore how hydraulics are used on sailboats and their benefits.

Hydraulic systems on sailboats use pressurized fluids to power various components.

These systems are typically comprised of a pump, hydraulic lines, a hydraulic cylinder, and various valves. The pump is driven by an engine or electric motor and creates pressure in the hydraulic lines.

This pressure is used to control the hydraulic cylinder. This in turn operates various sail and rigging systems.

One of the most common uses of sailboat hydraulic systems is for controlling the mainsail and genoa.

By using hydraulic power to adjust the sail shape and tension, sailors can quickly and easily optimize their performance in changing wind and sea conditions. We don’t have hydraulics on our sails, but we do for our boom vang and backstay.

So, it’s possible to have hydraulics for one system in a boat and not another. Some boats have hydraulic steering systems too.

The hydraulic system can also control the boom vang, which helps to control the shape of the mainsail by keeping the boom down and aft.

Hydraulics can also be used to control other systems on a sailboat, such as the backstay. This helps to control the mast bend and tension the forestay. It also controls the jib and spinnaker sheets, which control the angle and tension of the sails.

One of the main benefits of sailboat hydraulic systems on sailboats is their reliability and ease of use.

By eliminating the need for manual adjustments, sailors can quickly and easily optimize their performance, even in challenging conditions. Hydraulic systems are also very durable, requiring minimal maintenance and lasting for many years.

However, there are also some downsides to using sailboat hydraulic systems on sailboats.

Here is the back stay on Britican. She’s controlled by hydraulics and when pumped up, she bends the mast backwards. We use this when we’re racing. The backstay failed on us when sailing from The Bahamas to Turks & Caicos.

They can be expensive to install and maintain, and the hydraulic lines and components can be prone to leaks and other failures. Over the years, we’ve had our backstay leak (pictured above) in open ocean heading to Turks & Caicos. We’ve had our boom vang leak and fail. And most recently, our sailboat hydraulic panel leaked and failed.

Fortunate for us we were in a location where we could have the hydraulics serviced.

It can, however, be difficult to repair or replace, requiring specialized knowledge and tools.

Hydraulics are an essential component in modern sailboats, providing sailors with a reliable and efficient way to control their sails and rigging systems. While they do have some downsides, the benefits of hydraulic systems on sailboats are significant and have helped to revolutionize the sport of sailing.
