Do Any Of These Describe You?

Read below to determine if you’re similar to the people that we’ve coached in the past or are currently coaching now. In a nutshell, most of our coaching clients don’t want to mess around. They want to live the dream and they’re interested in getting to the end result in the least stressful, most economical and straightforward way possible.

You Don’t Know What You Don’t Know

Not having a cruising boat in the past nor extensive sailing cruising experience you’re wondering how you’ll go from no boat to boat with all the necessary skills, qualifications, knowledge, and experience to become a confident and proficient sailing cruiser. You have a good handle on how to make things happen but you don’t want to miss anything major nor do you want the preparation stage to last any longer than it has to!

It’s Not Just You – It’s We (or Us)

You’ve had the dream of sailing off into the sunset for a while but your partner, or family, isn’t 100% sold. You’re not sure how to make things happen in a way where everyone is committed and involved with making the dream a reality.

Your In A Rut

Perhaps you’re waiting for retirement, a pay-out, the sale of an asset, or a change in your schedule and can’t buy the boat yet. However, you want to keep the dream going and are wondering what skills you could be learning, what experiences you should get involved with or other ways to prepare for the lifestyle now so that when you’re finally out there you’re truly ready to live the life!

Not Sure Which Boat Is Best For You?

With endless choices, and even more price variables how do you ensure you make the right decision and buy the right boat for you? You’re only going to buy a boat once so the pressure to get it right, the first time, is high. Without previous experience on a variety of boats, boat layouts, boat variables, sailing locations, weather conditions, and sailing situations how do you know that you’re making the right choice?

Getting The Most For Your Buck

You’ve worked hard to earn your money and now’s the time to responsibly spend it and have some fun with life. But you’re not sure how to realistically budget for your sailing dream. Furthermore, you have questions as to what is worth buying, what is not, and what costs to expect when you get out and start cruising.

You Want To Get It Right

Sure, you’re an expert in your profession and you spent a long time becomeing an expert. But now it’s time to shift gears and learn a new skill and a new way of life. You don’t have time to mess around and get things wrong. You know that there’s a steep learning curve but you want to ride the curve quickly, efficiently and without any major hiccups.

Achieve Your Sailing Dreams

We are here to help you develop and achieve your sailing dreams in whatever way works best for you. Through phone calls, over emails, and with our extensive toolbox of resources we will hold your hand throughout the sailing lifestyle transition process so that you ultimately save money, avoid risks, save time, eliminate unnecessary anxiety, reduce fears and find a way to enjoy the process!

Having An Experienced Sounding Board

We can answer burning questions to quickly reduce worries and/or concerns and discuss potential plans, ideas, and decisions whether you need help with the boat buying process, making the transition to boat life or making a success out of the sailing lifestyle.

Keeping It Real – The Good, Bad, and Ugly

We’re not here to sell the lifestyle and discuss only the positive aspects. We’re here to give independent, unbiased, experience-based feedback. We’ll flag problem areas or speak out if we see something that’s not realistic. We’ll help to set accurate expectations.

Saving You Time, Money, And Unneccessary Stress

With eight years of boat ownership under our belts, having been hauled out over 25 times doing major and minor refits/renovations. And with over 30,000 nautical miles of sailing we know how to do things quicker, for less expense & with reduced stress levels.

Who Are We? Meet The Browns & Britican

We are a sailing family that have been providing sailing lifestyle support to people like you since 2014. To get to know us, check out one of our 200+ YouTube videos. Also, spend time looking over our 400+ articles that are on our Sailing Britican website.

Captain & First Mate

Simon (British) is the Captain and Kim (American), the First Mate. We’ve been sailing full-time since March 2014 and have sailed over 30,000 miles. Previously we had a Moody 346 on the south coast of England for a couple years. When we started we didn’t know how to do anything!

The Admiral

Sienna (British & American) has been sailing since she was 9 months old. She went full-time at the age of 3 1/2 and has now lived aboard a boat longer than she lived on land. That’s why she’s the Admiral. Sienna is on hand to help with any kid questions and happy to provide a childs perspective on cruising life.

The Boat

Britican is BRITish plus amerICAN put together. She’s a 2003 Oyster bluewater cruiser. Weighing 35 ton she was made to cross oceans and keep her guests safe in heavy weather. We’ve done many refits and renovations – new rigging, solar panel installation, lithium batteries to name a few. She’s a beauty!

Sailing Lifestyle Coaching is for those that…

Don’t want to mess around and reinvent the wheel!

Buying a boat and sailing off into the sunset is incredibly awesome but it’s not a quick process. There are hundreds, if not thousands, of small and large decisions that have to be made. We can help you to make better, more informed decisions so that the transition process goes quicker and smoother. Afterall, it’s the feeling of freedom while sitting anchored in a tropical bay enjoying a cold beverage thinking, ‘I made it – I’m living the life,’ that we’re all after anyway. Here are some of the ways we help our coaching clients:

When we started living the sailing lifestyle we had no clue what we were getting ourselves into.

The learning curve was overwhelming. We made so many mistakes. Way too often we spent money that we could have saved, made errors that we should have avoided, and ultimately reinvented the wheel way too many times.

With so many extensive text-book style boat manuals, sailing forums, YouTube channels, and sailing bloggers, we got lost. When issues came up we didn’t know where to find the important bit of information we needed. Sailing books seemed to be overly complicated and confusing.

Responses to questions asked in forums often made us feel bad for asking the question in the first place (duh..how do you not know that?).

YouTube channels can’t be searched so even if you recall seeing a sailing vlog cover something it’s often impossible to find it again! And sailing bloggers have great content but it’s often hard to find on their website.

“Simon and Kim transferred an enormous amount of knowledge and insight, much of which as stuck with me months later. I learned not only a bit on the ways of sailing, but they also regularly explained the nuances of choosing a boat, the finances and costs of ownership, maintaining and repairing them, along with how they wound up making the huge decision to sell everything and live on the sea!I encourage anyone who is dreaming about a similar path or who’d simply like to learn to sail better to reach out to them. They are both very down to earth and will make whatever experience and learning you are seeking a joy, they are simply lovely folk.”

“Simon and Kim – You’ve not only helped to keep us sane throughout the boat buying process but you saved us thousands of dollars. If it weren’t for your thoughtful consideration of our situation, we would have purchased the wrong boat and had a potential nightmare on our hands. And now that we’re out on the water, in our dreamboat, I value your assistance with the passage planning and all the other things that pop into my head.Armed with all your amazing checklists and guides and knowing that you’re at the end of the phone or an email has truly made our experience less stressful. Anyone that’s interested in buying a boat and sailing off into the sunset needs to have you two around!”

Simon and Kim on SVBritican were such a big help to me when I was preparing for our crossing from San Diego to Honolulu in April 2019. My coaching talks I subscribed for were such a reassurance to me, and I incorporated all of the advice that was given as far as provisioning and tips for handling trash, spare parts, and just having someone to bounce thoughts off of.  I was also managing a complete refit on my own as my husband was working in Hawaii and could only come back right before our cruise over, so, again, Simon and Kim just helped me to keep my composure thru the whole thing and their advice, help, and encouragement was a huge benefit to me.  The crossing to Hawaii was eventful with unprecedented weather patterns for the time of year we went and their advice on provisioning, safety tips, and crew were so helpful in making our crossing successful and our crew safe and happy.  Thanks so much, you guys!  It really means a lot to me and I greatly appreciated your help.  I would absolutely recommend Simon and Kim to help you in any way that they offer to make your cruising life the best it can be.  Best of luck to you all.

What we also found once we got into the sailing lifestyle is that there are a whole host of armchair sailors that love to cut you down if you don’t know everything.

The sailing world is so full of jargon and even salty seadogs will look at you like you’ve got a third eye when you don’t know the accurate terminology (How dare you ask what reefing means – you shouldn’t be a sailor if you don’t know that)!

Looking back, what we needed was to be able to send an email or pick up the phone and call someone.

Sometimes our questions were broad like: What size boat would be best for our family and budget? Where do I start when it comes to homeschooling? How much does it cost to keep the boat going on a monthly basis? As time went on, our questions became more specific like: How do we save money by servicing our engines/motors ourselves? How do we clean our fresh water tank? Does our passage plan from A to B make sense? Is this sailing gadget worth the money? And the questions, ‘Are we making the right decision? Are we doing things right?’ came up over and over again.

We had a few really good resources that we could go to get questions answered but felt bad asking too many things or taking up too much time.

We didn’t want to be a burden but we really wanted help. Eventually, however, the tide turned, and instead of seeking answers to hundreds of questions, we started answering those that have been following in our footsteps. Because of our learning curve, we’ve found answers and offered help, education, and insight through our blog articles, YouTube videos, sailing books, guides, and…

So, now we’ve started our coaching program via email and the phone (when not at sea).
