Ground beef mince and cabbage recipe
Whenever I tell other cruisers about the meals we eat aboard Britican, they often look at me and say, ‘You use your stovetop/oven in the summer?’

Perhaps many other cruisers spend the hot months gnawing on raw veggies or eating lunchmeats and cheese but we like to eat proper hearty meals. Yes it’s hot and yes being hot causes us to burn energy quicker thus making our stomachs ache for good food!

That being said, I do HATE cooking in the heat

It sucks. I also hate preparing any kind of meal when I’m overheated, tired and hungry.

Recently I’ve decided to cook our dinners in the morning before the sun heats up the saloon and galley. It’s been working very well.

I’ve been on the search for easy, nutritious meals and this latest recipe ticks all the boxes. I know that ground beef mince and cabbage doesn’t sound exciting but our family munched the first bowl down and then asked for more (and then more again).

Our daughter, Sienna, doesn’t eat cabbage!

But she ate this recipe. The cabbage isn’t even hidden – perhaps the yummy taste conquers all?

When I was making this recipe, the American in me wanted to add more ingredients but I resisted the urge. I decided that if it didn’t taste that great, the next time (if there was one) I could make things more complicated.

Well…I was extremely pleased with this recipe. It took less than 5 minutes to throw everything into a pot and every once in a while I gave it a stir.

Ground beef mince and cabbage recipe

  • 1 head of white cabbage, sliced into thin strips
  • 1 can of diced tomatoes with juice
  • 1 onion, halved and thinly sliced
  • 1 tablespoon Britican Galley Italian Blend (or a similar Italian herb and spice blend)
  • 1 pound/500g lean ground beef mince
  • salt and ground black pepper to taste (I used quite a bit of salt)

Combine cabbage, tomatoes, onion, Britican Galley Italian Blend (buy here!), salt, and black pepper in a large pot over low heat. Bring cabbage mixture to a simmer and then mix the ground beef mince into the pot. Stir well. Cover and cook until cabbage is tender and ground beef is cooked through, about 30 – 40 minutes. Stir occasionally.

Wanting to have more than the one-pot meal, I also made Victor’s Green Bean Salad and some fresh bread and butter. It was a great meal and I’m going to add this to my main recipe bank.

Give it a go and let me know what you think. It would also be a great meal to make ahead of time, freeze and use on long passages.
