What’s it like to experience an open ocean sailing passage? The preparation and first couple of days of sailing are hard work but after that, it’s usually easy-going, relaxing, and non-eventful. Our longest open sailing passage was from Gran Canaria, off the west side of Africa, to St Lucian in the Caribbean. Crossing the Atlantic Ocean took us 18 days and it’s one of the top 10 best things I ever did in my life. After that, we’ve mostly done two to three-day passages between St Martin and Grenada and back.
That is, until this last passage.
At the beginning of May, when it’s the best time to do it. Simon took a crew of four guys from St Martin all the way up to the United States. The plan was to take 10 days and go non-stop all the way. Of course, the plan didn’t come close to working out! It never does. In the end, I think it took Simon a full month to get to the final resting spot in the US. And the final spot wasn’t even the intended final spot. That’s sailing for you.
