How to make a Bottle Knot
This knot is used to tie onto the neck of a bottle. You can use it to create a float, as we did, to feed a rope underneath an anchor we pulled up. Or, if you’re in cold waters and you want to keep your beverages cold, you can use this knot and throw the bottles overboard. Of course, make sure that the other end of the rope is attached to the boat AND out of the way of the prop!
To get the full scoop on how to get a foreign anchor off your anchor, read: Anchoring – what do you do when you pull someone else’s anchor up with yours?
Below you’ll find a video showing you how to do the knot twice. I do it first and then, our esteemed guest, Admiral Stefano does in second. In fact, it’s Stefano that taught me the knot!
Followed by that, I have the steps in pictures with a bit of description. It took me a while to be able to do this knot easily, so don’t underestimate how simple we’re making it look. I’ve done the knot at least 100 times now. And slave-driver Stefano makes me do with my eye’s shut! Hehehehe.
Step by step instructions, with pictures, on how to do the Bottle Knot
Bottle knot step 1
Put the rope in one hand with a large loop going forward.
Bottle knot step 2
Pull the top of the loop down to your thumb. In the picture, my thumb is not on the top of the piece pulled down to show you, but you want to put your thumb on the the intersection of the ropes.
Bottle knot step 3
Working from the left twist the rope over the other rope 2 times. Below is the first twist.
Bottle knot step 4
The bit that is under the thumb needs to be pulled up through the centre of the twisted area. This is the tricky bit because you need to pull it up while holding the loop closest to you. The video will help demonstrate your finger placement better.
Bottle knot step 5
Pull and wiggle until the knot looks like the below. This will easily slip over a bottle and hold it secure.
Bottle knot step 6
Bottle knot step 7
Pull equally on each side.
Bottle knot step 8
Pull the bottle up and congratulate yourself for making an awesome knot!

I like your version, but get stuck on trying to watch step 4. Can’t seem to get past it…:(

Step 4 is such a tricky step…I need to sit next to you and show you. It took me quite a while to ‘get it.’ Did you watch the video too? I wonder if I can do another video, get very close and go very slow….
