Blue Water Sailing Experience

What’s a typical week like for blue water sailing cruisers who share their lifestyle with those that want to live the life? There’s never a dull moment, that’s for sure.

Blue water sailing cruisers are people that sail blue water sailboats.

A blue water boat is a type of sailboat that is designed and equipped for extended voyages on the open sea, typically crossing oceans or traveling long distances. “Blue water” refers to the deep, open waters of the ocean, as opposed to coastal or nearshore waters.

Blue water sailing cruisers are built to be sturdy, seaworthy, and self-sufficient. They have the ability to carry enough fuel, water, and supplies for long periods at sea. The boats typically have a displacement hull. This is a keel that provides stability and prevents capsizing. It also includes a large sail plan that can handle a range of wind conditions.

Blue water vessels are also designed with comfortable and functional living quarters, including cabins, galleys, and heads (bathrooms), that allow for extended living aboard.

Some examples of popular blue water sailing cruisers include the Hallberg-Rassy. Another is the Oyster (the boat we have and the one you’ll see in the video). Also, there is the Amel, although there are many other models and brands available on the market.

After years of sailing around my family and I decided to open up our boat and invite paying guests to sample the blue water sailing life for a week. Some guests come so they can try-before-they-buy. Others already have a sailboat but need more confidence.

In this video, our guests already purchased a sailboat. They wanted to learn how to maneuver in tight spaces, get the sails out, learn to anchor and attach to mooring balls, and see what living the life was all about. Boy…were they in for a treat!
