One of the biggest questions we get asked is, ‘What experience do I need to be a sailing cruiser?’ The quick answer is any experience and as much as you can possibly get BEFORE you actually buy a boat.

In this video, Simon covers what a typical day is like as a sailing cruiser. He then offers three suggestions as to experiences you’ll want to get followed up with several areas that you’ll want to focus on.

Summary of Experience Needed

In response to the question, ‘What experience do I need to be a sailing cruiser?’ There are three things you want to do before you buy a boat. You’ll want to go out on as many boats as you possibly can getting a variety of experiences. You’ll want to get on boats in different locations and in varying sea states from calm to squally. Furthermore, rather than learning the hard way, it’s best to seek the guidance of an expert.

When sailing on different boats, in a variety of locations and in different sea states, you’ll want to learn about boat safety, maneuvering in tight spots/docking, getting the sails out, different points of sail, tacking & jibing, anchoring, mooring balls, the rules of the road, and how to take care of an engine. Watch the video above to get the full scoop!
