In need of a boat checklist? Are you new to sailing, afraid of making mistakes, or overwhelmed by the crazy learning curve of becoming a sailing cruiser? How much do you know versus what you don’t know? Do you have this nagging feeling that there are things you should be doing, but you don’t know what they are?

If so, it’s time to start using a boat checklist!

A boat checklist is a simple yet powerful tool that can help you stay organized. It will also help you save time, and avoid costly mistakes. Whether you’re a new or experienced sailor, a checklist can make all the difference in ensuring a successful boat life.

So, why do sailors need to use a boat checklist? Let’s dive in!

Boat Checklist

Sailing: A boat checklist can be a lifesaver when preparing for a sailing trip.

For example, a sailor might use a pre-sailing checklist to check mission-critical systems. Systems like safety equipment, engine status, and rig checks. They might also use a pre-departure checklist. Use these to check weather forecasts and tide tables and inspect the boat for damage. Also, to confirm that all systems, including the VHF radio and navigation instruments, are working correctly.

By following a checklist, a sailor can avoid the stress of forgetting essential gear or missing critical steps in preparation. This helps them stay calm and focused on the journey ahead.

One of the pre-sailing steps we take on Britican is always to check our automatic bilge. First, we check it is on ‘auto’ and is working before a passage. This is mission-critical! If the bilge is off or not working, the boat could fill with water without us knowing. When we see water above our floorboards, it might be too late to recover.

Boat checklist

Here I am doing my rigging checks listed on my boat checklist.

Boat Maintenance: Proper boat maintenance is crucial for ensuring that a boat stays in good condition and remains safe for use.

However, maintaining a boat can be a time-consuming and overwhelming task, especially for sailors who are not experienced in boat maintenance.

A boat maintenance checklist can simplify this process by breaking down maintenance tasks into manageable steps and ensuring nothing is overlooked.

For example, a sailor might use a monthly maintenance checklist to check the thru-hull fittings, inspect the hull, anodes, and propeller for damage, and clean the boat’s exterior.

On Britican, we have a calendar that breaks down all our cleaning and maintenance jobs throughout the month. So, over the month, each room is cleaned from top to bottom on a revolving basis. For example, on Monday, I might clean the forward berth. This includes using vinegar on the walls and headlining. Also, the fan, vents, windows, closets, hatch, and floors. Then, a few days later, I’ll clean the galley.

By spreading out cleaning and maintenance jobs over a month, sailors can ensure that their boat is always in good condition and ready to sail. In addition, staying on top of boat maintenance can help you to find issues before they become big problems and ultimately prevent costly repairs.

Safety: Safety should always be a top priority for boating.

A boat safety checklist can help ensure that a sailor has all the necessary safety gear on board and that the boat is equipped to handle emergencies. Further, a pre-passage safety check can enable boaters to find issues before they’re out at sea, where it’s more challenging to fix.

A safety checklist might include checking that all passengers have a serviced life jacket and that the boat has an in-date fire extinguisher, flares, and a whistle.

To name one of the checks on our pre-passage boat safety checklist, we ensure our safety lines are closed (side and aft) and look at the connections from the bow to the stern of the boat. Imagine someone relying on the line to keep them inside the boat, and it becomes unsecured, or there’s an opening? A person could fall off the boat!

Boat Checklist

Here’s Simon doing our safety pre-passage checks.

Successful Boat Life: Using a boat checklist can help a sailor have a more enjoyable and stress-free boat life.

By staying organized and on top of tasks, a sailor can spend more time enjoying the water and less worrying about what needs to be done.

For example, a sailor might use a long passage checklist to ensure they adequately provisioned, planned, and prepared the boat. By following a list, they can avoid the stress of forgetting something critical and can focus on having a fun and relaxing trip.

Using a boat checklist can provide numerous benefits for sailors.  These include ensuring that they are prepared for sailing trips.  Also, simplifies boat maintenance tasks and promotes safety. By following a checklist, sailors can stay organized, and save time. And avoid costly mistakes, making their boat lives more enjoyable and successful.

One theory proposes that "bottoms up" may have eme One theory proposes that "bottoms up" may have emerged from nautical or seafaring origins. In sailing, the term "bottom" refers to the lowest part of a ship or boat, usually submerged in the water.

"Bottoms up" could have been a way for sailors to indicate that they had reached a safe depth where the bottom of the ship was not in danger of hitting the seabed. This usage could have been adopted into everyday language and transformed into a drinking toast.

The phrase has become a common part of drinking culture and is widely used today to signify finishing a drink in a single gulp.

The anchorage has spectacular blue water, and the beach is white-littered with beautiful palm trees. It's a definite cruiser must-see destination.

The island is private, so you can't walk on land, but you can enjoy the beach and visit the bar (when open). Warning - the prices are high! You can, however, see an incredible sunset looking out past your anchored boat. It is well worth the crazy cost of a G&T!

To visit the bar, take your dinghy over to the dingy dock, and the bar is on the left.

I like the variety that sailing offers. The last few nights have been busy, social, and engaging at Le Phare Bleu, a lovely boutique marina on the south. It will be quiet, peaceful, and relaxing tonight at Ronde Island.

It's our new guests' first full day out on Britican! We'll have to celebrate that 😉

The knot commonly used to tie a fender onto the si The knot commonly used to tie a fender onto the side of a boat to protect it from other boats and docks is called a "round turn and two half hitches." It is a simple and effective knot that provides a secure attachment for the fender.

👉Follow us for more tips about being a confident sailing cruiser!

Here's how you tie a fender knot:

1. Start by passing the line's working end (rope) around a secure point on the boat, such as a cleat or railing.

2. Take the line's working end and make a loop around the standing part (the part of the line connected to the fender).

3. Pass the line's working end through the loop you just created.

4. Bring the line's working end around and make another loop around the standing part, similar to the first loop.

5. Pass the working end of the line through the second loop.

6. Tighten the knot by simultaneously pulling on the working end and the standing part.

This knot will create a secure attachment for the fender, allowing it to protect the boat's side from impacts with other boats or docks.

You can adjust the fender's height and position for optimal protection according to your specific docking situation.

Here's one of my favorite things about living on a Here's one of my favorite things about living on a boat (It's Kim here). I adore having my 5 pm glass of wine and watching the world go by in our cockpit.

I see turtles popping up for air, new boaters arriving at the bay, birds feeding, and kids still swimming and laughing in the water.

On land, I don't stop and appreciate my surroundings like I do on the water. There are trees, birds, and people on land, but it's not the same.

Looking at the sea causes bliss! It's as simple as that.

Happy Friday!

The saying "Plans are written in sand at low tide" The saying "Plans are written in sand at low tide" is a metaphorical expression that conveys the idea that plans and intentions are often transient and subject to change. It suggests that plans, like words written in sand, can easily be washed away or altered by unforeseen circumstances or changing conditions.

Just as the tides can rise and erase what is written in the sand, life can bring unexpected events, obstacles, or opportunities that can disrupt or redirect our plans. It highlights the notion that despite our best intentions and meticulous planning, external factors can arise that require us to adapt or abandon our initial course of action.

This saying serves as a reminder to remain flexible, open-minded, and resilient in the face of uncertainty. It emphasizes the importance of being prepared to adjust our plans and embrace change when necessary, recognizing that life is dynamic and unpredictable.

Nothing teaches you more about flexibility, open-mindedness, and resilience than being a sailor!
