Lewmar Winch Service Checklist

It wasn’t until we used our winch one day, and it made a horrible sound, that we discovered that it needed to be serviced. No – we didn’t have a Lewmar winch service checklist to remind us of this job. I suppose we’re not unlike most bluewater cruisers in that we’re always learning as we go. Sometimes things break before we learn but other times our egos and pockets are spared.

Before you learn through a very bad noise or a potential breakage, let me tell you that all your winches need to be serviced every year. And although the insides of a winch can look intimidating, servicing them is actually rather straightforward. Look over the checklist below and then watch a video demonstration of Simon doing a Lewmar winch service on our size 54 manual winch.

Lewmar Winch Service Checklist

Lewmar Winch Service Checklist

  1. Prepare to service the Lewmar winch. You’ll need a bucket, plastic bag (to lay down for the parts), old toothbrush, gear or winch grease, and gear oil (see product listing below). You might also need the Pawl’s and Pawl spring’s associated with the size and make of the winch your servicing.
  2. Take the Lewmar winch apart. To do this, unscrew the top and take all the pieces and parts off slowly. Lay them on a plastic back nearby. We lay the parts in the cockpit so they don’t accidentally get kicked off the side. TIP: Video record your job or take pictures so if you’re in any doubt as to how things need to look you can refer back to the video/picture.
  3. Wash everything in White Spirt. Using a toothbrush and rag get all the old grease and grime off every part – cogs, bearings, rods, washers, winch base, winch cover – everything.
  4. Lightly grease everything except the Pawl and Pawl Spring. You’ll want to use gear oil on that instead. Make sure to lightly grease every part – inside, outside, in the corners and grooves. Don’t put blobs of grease anywhere. Lightly goes is the key.
  5. Service the Pawl and Pawl Spring (your best bet is to watch the video to see how this is done). This is the only component that may need to be replaced during a service.
  6. Put everything back together in the opposite manner than when you took everything off.

How can you help support Sailing Britican?

We don’t get paid to make our instructional and travel-vlog style videos. And the amount we make from YouTube on adverts rarely amounts to anything over $200 per month. Channels with more views get way more income due to more people clicking on the adverts. We seem to be serving a small niche where many of our viewers enjoy our offering. We really want to keep them going but we are struggling with the cost of keeping them going.

If you’d like to help us out there’s a way where you can pledge an amount as low as $2 a video or a month. The money we make from our current supporters pays for the website hosting ($300/month) and some of our Internet connection charges ($275/month on average).

Our supporter proceeds, however, don’t cover loads of other costs associated with the making of the videos. We’re not looking to get paid to make videos (although that would be awesome). We’re just looking for some help to cover some of our costs.

In return for supporting Sailing Britican, we offer early viewings on the videos and a bit of inside-scoop to what’s going on in our lives. And depending on your pledge level there are various goodies depending on the amount pledged. I never realized that there were so many aspects to sailing that this very comprehensive and complete book covers in ensuring that risks are minimized through thorough pre planning. In addition, the offer of the Microsoft Word soft copy has allowed me to modify, consolidate and tailor these checklists to my own personal needs. As a serious sailor in Australia and the Pacific, I would highly recommend this book."

Hey Robb. You can copy the contents of the page and paste it in a word document. That will allow you to print. I never turned off my comments on YouTube. YT forced them off due to use having a minor in some of the videos. After a couple years of disallowing us, they finally turned them back on. For grease, use marine grease. Kim
